Following on from yesterday’s post on how to use Google Alerts to find out Who’s Linking to Your Blog it made me realise that I use Google Alerts for other things too.
You can use them to find out when your website or blog pages are indexed by Google.
Simply Use The The Following Google Alert Search Term
site:http://yoursite.com
where yoursite.com is the domain name of your blog or website.

By doing this you will be sent an alert whenever a page on your site or blog is indexed by Google.
If you use the “as-it-happens” option when you create the Google Alert you will be alerted when Google indexes one of your pages.
Also..
The advantage of using the domain name without the www part is that you will also get an alert for any sub-domains that you may have on your site such as blog.yoursite.com or news.yoursite.com
More details of the site command can be found here at the Site Command Description page on Google’s Blog.
Using Google Alerts To Detect If Your Site Has Been Hacked
I also stumbled across Patrick Altoft’s BlogStorm article which shows how you can use Google Alerts to show if someone has hacked your site and placed hidden adult or spam related terms on it.
By creating a ‘site:’ based alert that uses typical adult or spam related terms such as the following examples:
viagra OR cialis OR levitra OR Phentermine OR Xanax site:yoursite.com
you will be alerted if someone hacks onto your site and plants any hidden adult or spam related links on it.
Again if you use the “as-it happens” option, hopefully you will be on the case pretty quickly, before Google penalises your site.
